Absolutely. Our team has over 50 years of combined experience…we will suggest the perfect light, soil and water requirements for the plants that you purchase

Does Blue Horizon order plants from other places?

We source a number of our plants from the West Coast, where the climate runs ahead of ours allowing us to get a jump on the season. Additionally, we source from other areas of North America As demand continues to grow, our unique, homegrown supply can’t always keep up, but we stay committed to sourcing only standout, head-turning varieties you won’t find just anywhere.

How often do you get new plants?

Most new plants arrive in Spring although we have a huge stock already available at the nursery. We also augment our selection throughout the growing season.

What are your most popular plants?

Our Japanese maples and rare conifers are favorites of those wanting to create landscape statements.

Is it worth driving out?

Meet Paul and Bill

Paul, our grafting expert, has over 40 years of experience in the nursery trade. Bill retired after 27 years as a research scientist from the pharmaceutical industry and now is responsible for rooting cuttings.

Our nursery, established in 2003 provides the highest quality rare plants to the enthusiast and the novice. We are located near the Michigan lakeshore, surrounded by orchards, vineyards and blueberry farms less than 10 minutes east of South Haven, Michigan. The nursery is nestled on a 71 acre parcel of land with over 10 acres of native wetlands for exploration, in addition to a 1 acre pond.

The adventure began as a hobby with the two of us having a lifelong obsession with plants. Over time, we developed a keen interest in dwarf and miniature conifers and began collecting witches brooms, grafting and propagating the more unusual specimens. We are long-time members of the American Conifer Society (http://www.conifersociety.org).

We propagate most of our plants through grafting and rooted cuttings in addition to growing some plants from seed. Paul and Bill are always seeking out the newest plants with the most extraordinary characteristics. We welcome your suggestions to help shape Blue Horizon into a special destination for all to enjoy.

As collectors we felt there was a lack of “out of the norm” plants in most nurseries. What makes Blue Horizon varieties truly remarkable is that many of our cultivars originated from witches brooms. These are natural spontaneous mutations that are rare and possess unusual qualities.

We hunted these natural treasures down and using expert grafting techniques now produce plants with extraordinary characteristics.

They have a wide variety of plants, shrubs, and trees that are a cut above and healthier than what you can find at the big box DIY stores.
